Walhalla Wanderweg Greenway

About The Wanderweg Greenway

The Walhalla Wanderweg Greenway, known to most citizens as “The Greenway”, was named in honor of the City’s German history – “wanderweg” meaning wandering path. The Greenway is currently a +/- 1 mile paved recreational trail that follows a right of way along West South Broad Street.

Greenway Trail Access

The Greenway meanders along West South Broad Street. The general public may access the Greenway at numerous locations, including the Earle House beside Kaufmann Square Park and County Library. Pets are permitted but must be on a leash at all times. Public Parking is available at Kaufmann Square Park, behind the Old Saint John’s Meeting House, the Earle House and County Library.

Walhalla Wanderweg Greenway Trail Etiquette & Safety Tips

  1. Avoid walking more than two people abreast: This allows other users to pass safely. Please form a single line in congested areas or when others are trying to pass. Please help us make the trail a friendly environment for all trail users by not blocking the path. Travel in a consistent and predictable manner. Always look before changing positions on the trail.
  2. Stay to the right, pass on the left: Please always stay to the right of the trail to facilitate 2-way traffic and using caution when passing other trail users on the left.
  3. Cyclists should always ride single file, announce themselves when passing “On your left” and travel at a safe speed: Please slow down in congested areas. Always maintain a safe speed that allows you to brake and turn quickly. Remember that pedestrians always have the right-of-way.
  4. Keep dogs on a leash: All four-legged users must be kept on a leash that is six feet long or shorter. Always pick up after your pet and dispose of animal waste.
  5. Avoid standing still: This helps prevent collisions. Please step off of the trail if you need to pause or take a rest.
  6. Use Caution at street crossings: Please slow and stop at all street crossings and use caution when proceeding into the intersection, even when using a marked crosswalk. Don’t assume that vehicles are going to stop.
  7. Teach your children proper trail etiquette: Prevent accidents involving children by ensuring that your children understand these rules and how to be safe on the Greenway.
  8. Listen for others: Headphones may impair your ability to hear and react to potentially dangerous situations.
  9. No motorized vehicles are allowed.  ADA-approved electronic personal mobility devices are allowed. However, please note that in order to maintain the trail you may occasionally encounter City maintenance trucks, mowers and staff on and alongside the trail.
  10. Wear a helmet: Cyclists, roller skaters/bladers, and skateboard users should always wear helmets.
  11. Respect Private Property, Stay on the Greenway.

Development of The Wanderweg Greenway

Planning for the Walhalla Greenway was conceived several years ago as a way to tie downtown Walhalla to Stumphouse Mountain Park and the Palmetto Trail. The Greenway was planned to encircle downtown Walhalla along North and South Broad Streets.

Phase I of the Greenway, +/- 1 mile, travels from the intersection of West South Broad and S College Streets to Coffee Road. This section was completed in the Spring of 2024 connecting neighborhoods, Kaufmann Square Park (the Depot), Earle House, County Library, the Agricultural Building, Oconee County services and more. It’s a quick walk from the Greenway to James M. Brown Elementary School, downtown Main Street and the City Park & Pool.

Future phases may include connecting to the North side of the City and finally to Stumphouse Mountain Park – a terminus to the Palmetto Trail. Future phases are not currently planned.

Greenway Trail Funding

An application was made in late 2019 to the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) for federal funding to begin the first phase of the Walhalla Wanderweg Greenway. Walhalla was notified in August of 2020 that a 50% matching grant was approved for $500,000. The project was administered by the Appalachian Council of Governments (ACOG).
