Walhalla — The long-awaited redesign of South Catherine Street to a one-way street with on-street parking will soon be a reality. Work will begin between September 25th and October 5th and be completed in time for the Walhalla Merchant’s Market and Oktoberfest events later that month. During this time, barricades will be placed at the intersections of S. Catherine and E. Main Streets, and S. Catherine and E. South Broad Streets. Once complete, traffic flow will be one-way, allowing southbound movement from E. Main Street to E. South Broad Street only.

During 2020, the City of Walhalla studied the option of changing the traffic pattern from two lanes to one lane on South Catherine Street.  After a public comment period, the City elected Option 2, to allow southbound traffic only with parallel parking on S. Catherine.  SCDOT approved the request in January 2021; and the project was awarded in April 2023.

This project will provide additional parking downtown and assist with traffic flow. More information may be found on the City of Walhalla’s website – Current Projects webpage https://www.cityofwalhalla.com/current-projects/s-catherine-one-lane/.
