Walhalla, SC – The City of Walhalla is excited to receive approval on additional water and sewer work as part of $10 million water and sewer projects funded through SC Rural Infrastructure Authority (RIA) currently underway. New projects will include additional sewer line and manhole rehabilitation around the Cane Creek basin; and water line upgrades along Westminster Hwy near Oak Grove Rd and along Highway 11.
These infrastructure projects are estimated to cost $2,380,000. The original three SCIIP funded projects came in under budget, allowing the City to pursue additional projects, with RIA’s approval. The City plans to use existing contractors for the additional work, within the parameters of the grant guidelines. City Council is expected to hear the proposed change-orders at its October meeting.
The additional sewer project will expand the installation of CIPP (cure-in-place-pipe lining) on 10 and 12-inch mains, while the water line projects will install 6” and 8” inch DIP (ductile iron pipe) along Westminster Highway and expand 10” DIP (ductile iron pipe) along SC Highway 11.
These infrastructure projects are not only an important investment in public health and safety, it also helps support the economic health of the communities we serve. Economic impact studies show that for every $1 million invested in water infrastructure, upwards of 15 jobs are generated throughout the economy (US Water Alliance, 2017). This project is made possible through funding from the South Carolina Infrastructure Investment Program, South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority.
