WALHALLA, S.C. – The City of Walhalla shares that Police Chief Tim Rice announced his retirement today, concluding a distinguished career in public safety and leadership.
Chief Rice was appointed as the permanent police chief in June 2022, following a period of transition in the department after the resignation of the former Chief. Prior to his appointment, Rice served as captain in the Walhalla Police Department and was promoted to interim chief in January 2022.
Since joining the department in 2019, Chief Rice has played a pivotal role in modernizing operations, including updating the department’s records system, leading complex investigations and resolving numerous cases. His leadership and dedication earned him the 2021 Oconee Municipal Public Safety Officer of the Year award.
Before his service in Walhalla, Rice worked as an Oconee County Sheriff’s Deputy and served in North Carolina with the NC Forest Service, Jackson County Dispatch and Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, bringing a diverse background of public service to his law enforcement career.
Mayor Tim Hall expressed his gratitude, stating: “I wish Tim all the best in retirement and thank him for his service to the City of Walhalla and its citizens. He will leave behind some big shoes to fill. This is a well-deserved retirement after many years of service in law enforcement.”
City Administrator Celia Myers added: “It has been an honor to work alongside Chief Rice, whose dedication, integrity and commitment to public safety and this City has left a lasting impact. Under his leadership, the department has strengthened trust, advanced innovative strategies and upheld high standards of service—leading us to be named one of the Safest Cities in South Carolina for multiple years. I wish Chief Rice the very best in retirement and thank him for his years of exemplary service.”
Chief Rice’s last day with the City will be February 19. The City of Walhalla will soon begin the search for Chief Rice’s successor.
