Walhalla, SC (September 12, 2025) – Walhalla Water today announced the first switch to newly installed water mains along South Tugaloo Street, part of $10 million water and sewer projects funded through SC Rural Infrastructure Authority (RIA) currently underway. Completion of the water line projects is scheduled for Spring 2026 and will help water capacity and quality within the uptown area and to improve reliability for customers, reduce service disruptions, and increase water flows for firefighting. The system improvements replace water mains dating as far back as the late 1920s.

The project involves outside contractors installing new ductile iron pipe, replacing smaller diameter water main in following areas: North West Broad Street; West Main Street; South West Broad Street and side streets.

The newly installed water mains have been tested and received. The City has received the Permit to Operate from SC Department of Environmental Services (SC DES). Crews worked through the night to switch over to the newly installed water main and tie into the Walhalla Water distribution system. This represents the first transfer to the new water line.

During the transitions, customers might experience temporary service interruptions, discolored water, and/or lower than normal water pressure.  Crews will work as quickly as possible to shorten the length of these temporary inconveniences.

This infrastructure upgrade project is not only an important investment in public health and safety, it also helps support the economic health of the communities we serve. Economic impact studies show that for every $1 million invested in water infrastructure, upwards of 15 jobs are generated throughout the economy (US Water Alliance, 2017). This project is made possible through funding from the South Carolina Infrastructure Investment Program, South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority.

The City of Walhalla and its Walhalla Water Division thanks its customers for their patience and support during these projects.
